rootbeer on the roof.
NYFW had a real effect on me stylistically & personally. first off, i now use ridiculous words like ‘stylistically’ but aside from my prolifically expanded slightly affected vocabulary, i’ve also started taking more style risks. i wear what i want, rather than what i think people here want to see. granted, being in NYC does help but my wardrobe has gotten more fun recently.

rootbeer is good.
(that was profound)

Paired up with one of my favorite online style sources (StyleSeek) to take part in their ongoing review series. I ended up landing a pair of suede boat shoes from the Freeport Maine family owned Eastland Shoe Corp. Eastland has been around since 1955 (when our grandparents would walk up hill both ways with no shoes in the snow etc.) Since then, they’ve really proved themselves as a lasting quality company - they even have their own shoelace knot. I’ve been giving these some turf time for the last few weeks:

pros:
construction - the yarmouth is crafted with a nicely chosen suede. not too soft, as to lose its shape but not ridged enough to make your feet angry with you & it’s color is a great contrast to a pair of dark denim. although 15 or so hours does not constitute truthfully putting these to ‘the test’ they’re holding up excellently and i don’t imagine that changing.
inexpensive - i guess this is a relative statement but in a blogosphere where we’re often told “buy less; buy better” for a smooth $125 i have no problem adding these to the arsenal
versatility - i’m not really a boat shoe guy. i don’t boat. (or belong to a fraternity) but these gave me a chance to experiment a bit with a different shape shoe in a material i’m very familiar with. I decided to dress them up a bit with a blazer above but feel it’s a pretty simplistic design that speaks for itself.
cons:
break in time - maybe i just have a soft heel but for the first week or so i recommend pairing the yarmouth with a fresh bandaid or two.
seasonal - like any boat shoe, i think its more easily worn in the warmer months.

grab the eastland yarmouth boat shoe for your own feet

keep warm, layer.
I picked up this denim jacket when i was home for this past holiday (along with the playboy of my birthmonth) and have been trying to include it where ever i can. it must have quite a few stories to it because its authentically broken in & the fit is a bit irregular. theres plenty of room in the bicep area but the torso an lower arm are very slim. Stand alone or as a layering piece i’ve come to really like it and for $25 I consider this one of my first ‘vintage’ finds.

warmth, ties & penny loafers.
i went on a prompt and precise hunt for a killer gray wool blazer & came home with this sweater. since i’m pursuing the ‘coatless winter’ and layering up with pieces like this cardigan (and a few undershirts) i felt it fell in all-swell-like. A thick sweater can go a long way and this one has all the right details, a great fit and the right color to push me through till the layers shed.

fuck it, falls here.
so, every once in awhile, every once in awhile, i buy things i probably shouldn’t. like this jacket, or three extra drinks. i call it an ‘investment’ but i know what it really was, a splurge. an “i’m truthfully so horribly sick of summer i’m making mistakes financially” type splurge. it’ll last years, and it looks awesome but it was risky and borderline regrettable, live purchase and learn.
